Evony Offensive vs Defensive Mastery: Choose Research by Role

Academy scholars compare offensive and defensive strategy boards using troop models

Do not split research automatically between Offensive Mastery and Defensive Mastery. Choose the branch that addresses your current role and the failure shown in your reports. Evony introduced both Academy research fields in the official Version 5.10.3 announcement, but the announcement does not prescribe one universal order.

Start With the Account's Job

Research has value only when it supports what the account actually does. Define the next four-week role before spending:

  • Attack-led account: initiates PvP attacks or needs stronger offensive execution.
  • Defense-led account: prioritizes city defense, reinforcement, or survival.
  • Mixed account: changes roles but still needs one immediate bottleneck solved first.

Do not infer the best branch from total power. Use recent reports and alliance responsibilities.

Research Selection Workflow

  1. Open the Academy and confirm both categories are available on your account.
  2. Read the exact technology descriptions and prerequisites in the live interface.
  3. Review several relevant battle reports, not one exceptional result.
  4. Identify one repeated problem: insufficient offensive output, poor durability, or a role mismatch.
  5. Select the smallest research step that directly addresses that problem.
  6. Record the before state.
  7. Complete the research and compare the same report indicators afterward.

Practical Decision Example

Suppose an account joins attacks but is rarely responsible for holding objectives. A defense-heavy research detour may be less useful than an offensive step that supports its assigned march. Conversely, a player assigned to reinforce or defend should not copy an attacker's research sequence merely because it produces visible power.

Use the same criteria for each choice: current role, repeated weakness, prerequisites, opportunity cost, and a measurable post-research check.

Common Mistakes

  • Researching by power gain instead of role.
  • Comparing reports from different targets and calling the result a test.
  • Assuming the branch names replace the detailed technology descriptions.
  • Starting a long chain without checking prerequisites.
  • Spreading materials so widely that no priority improves meaningfully.

FAQ

Which branch should every player research first?

There is no official universal order. Prioritize the branch that supports your current role and repeated report weakness.

Are Offensive Mastery and Defensive Mastery Academy categories?

Yes. The official Version 5.10.3 announcement identifies them as new Academy research fields.

Should a mixed account alternate every level?

Not automatically. Finish the step that solves the immediate bottleneck, then reassess.

How should I verify improvement?

Compare similar reports and the same relevant indicators before and after the research.
